Food thermometer in tongs

Food

Some dishes need a certain amount of heat to get the right flavor. Best example are steaks which are cooked with several level of doneness. If there's a tong that can measure the heat of the steak while cooking you can precisely get how you want your steak cooked. The thermometer in the tong should be built to only measure the point of contact between the food and the tong. This is to avoid incorrect readings because of outside environmental factors. For served dishes, the tong is also a good way to check the temperature so you'll know when to reheat them.

I can't imagine why this tool is not common in the kitchen. Cooking is just chemistry. You need the right kind of precision tools to achieve the right chemical reaction. Maybe for some cooks they don't need this because they have a good instinct or perhaps skillful enough to get a good estimate of the heat. But for those who want to add science into cooking, this is exactly the kind of tool that you need.

I don?t have one myself, but I know lots of other brewers who swear by them.

The Thermapen is an instant read thermometer that will make sure you never under or overcook your food. It takes readings in less than three seconds, is accurate to less than a degree, and is designed to last for ages.

@jcunninghamcj It's fast enough to know when a steak in on the bleeding edge between medium rare and medium (sorry, pun not intended)

@jcunninghamcj ?that's good enough for my budget

@cpiercecl still a good deal and in use for a lot of my cooking where temps raise Slowly.

@rfreemanck Very very nice - and it sounds like you had the same oven thermometer I had.?

Awesome!

My guy's "instant read thermometer" seems to take 15-20 seconds when I try to use it, which seems WAY less than "instant".

@lparkercp How fast is not as fast ?

  • Reply

@lparkercp pretty much normal?

  • Reply

@bbishopcq in need of replacement unless I want to pay more for the almost-instant version

  • Reply

@bbishopcq I don't get how they can call 15+ seconds INSTANT.

?I don't get why anyone would want to use one of those instead of the stick-the-probe-in-and-leave-it thermometers?

@rruizcu I love it; didn't get one myself, but I'm sorely tempted to.

@rruizcu I use a laser thermometer for making beer. It works great, and doubles as a cat toy.

@jgutierrezcv When my father bought his Thermapen, he also got one of their laser thermometers too in a bundle deal

That is pretty cool

@mfoxcx The Thermapen would definitely have more applications, but the laser thermometer is certainly a nifty piece of tech for checking surface temperature.

does it come with a battery in it?

@cgordond0 I live in Sweden and would really like one.?

@lcoopercz I've been using mine for a for a couple months now and I would say hands down

@lcoopercz Really like the auto/forced backlit feature and especially the motion sensor.

Just ordered mine.?

my thermapen has had the same battery for 2 years

@ksimmonsd5 I find it annoying when I have to close and reopen it. gonna pick up a mk4 for sure?

  • Reply

@ksimmonsd5 I got mine as soon as I could. I've had the older Thermapen for quite some time, so I was already accustomed to the fast read capability.

  • Reply

@dwatkinsd7 I'm so pleased with the new features.

  • Reply

@dwatkinsd7 If anyone has experience with the old dial bimetallic strip thermometers, you will recall how it took forever to become near asymptotic. Ain't nobody got time for dat! ?
