Smart external hard drives

Smart

Unless you have OCD, there's no way for you to know the remaining capacity of your external drive without plugging it in your computer. With file and video sizes quickly increasing these days, capacity management of your external hard drive is becoming more important. It's difficult to manage the capacity without knowing the remaining space so it would be good if there's a display in the external drive that shows this information. This can save you a lot of time in checking the space in the computer. Also minimizes the damage done to the USB port everytime you plug and remove the drive.

I need this in my life. I have many external drives and most of the time I have to check each one to know the remaining space. I know this can easily be resolved by being more organized but I don't want to. This simple innovation can really make my life easier.

I have used a number of Seagate and Western Digital external USB 3.0 hard drives. Over time the newer drives tends to operate a bit faster than my older ones. That is my sense with this Seagate 2TB USB 3.0 drive when used with USB 3.0.

They should have at least 2tb hard driveand I will be very happy with it.

?The only things I can complain about is that the LED light is way too bright when in operation and I have to turn the unit around when in use. Also, judging by the picture, it looks as if the outside coating would have been rubberized, but it is not. It is slick plastic.

While many reviews suggest these can be opened then swapped in a PS4, mine has different internal hardware.

@efoster3o Hooked it up to my Xbox One. Loaded my games on it. Starts up no problems every time

@efoster3o You can't beat the amount of space you get, and the price is a little bit expensive

@jwebb3y If you're buying a desktop-class drive for video or lots of file transfers, look for one with a built-in fan, as the extra cooling will extend the drive's life expectancy.

@jwebb3y desktop-class models currently top out at 8TB per mechanism

Hard drives use S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) to gauge their own reliability and determine if they?re failing.?

@fhernandez45 A vast majority of enclosures are USB 2.0-only enclosures. Most media devices and routers only support USB drives.?

Choosing an external interface depends a lot on how you want to use your drive and how much you want to spend.

@bgreene47 hardware isn?t perfect ? hard drives can fail without any S.M.A.R.T. warnings
