Hammock tent for treehouse camping

Hammock

A hammock may work great in your yard, as a place to relax and drink a cold beer on a hot day, but as a tool for camping, they're just too specific in their use and too comfortable. Science also confirmed what hammock-enthusiasts have been saying for years - the gentle rocking motion not only puts you to sleep faster, but the sleep is just plain better. Hang these tents around trees and you can make your own tree house. It would be paradise, except for the mosquitoes lounging in your area.

If you're sleeping with someone, bring a tent. If you're not going to be in the woods, bring a tent. If you like swaying in the wind during a freezing rain thunderstorm, bring a hammock.

@cwatson8c What kind of hammock should I buy?

  • Reply

@jpierce8d ?I have occasionally considered switching to a tent for that reason but I really enjoy hanging.

@cwatson8c Any suggestions on a good saddle bag for bike, strapping my pack to the rear seat is getting a little old.

?I've done a lot of camping on tropical islands and you know what sucks? Sleeping in a hot, stuffy tent!

@scarr8g Hammocks are terrible for use in cold weather climates.?

@scarr8g ?A hammock with a mosquito net is excellent in these applications.?

@mmyers8i ?if you don't have a mosquito net for your hammock, you can burn a green mosquito coil under your hammock and it works just as well.

@rmontgomery8j does the mosquito net work with other similar brand hammocks??

@melliott8k Yes it does! I used it with a Grand Trunk for a little while. Most hammocks are cut to the same length and it fits the average length.

The first time i went on a over nighter with a couple of friends, they all spent a couple hours setting up there lean-to's, and I just set up a hammock and a tarp over top. I was the only one that got a good night's sleep last night haha.?

great comments showing me just what I needed to understand about hanging a hammock.

Interestingly, you also start with a figure 8 knot when you wind up a ball of yarn. I didn't know that it was called that, though.?

@clawrence8v Very helpful! thanks a lot?

But tent camping is still lighter carrying weight. My tent set up with stakes and bug net is 24 oz. my hammock set up I managed to get down to just over 34 oz. after fiddling with it?

@ljackson8x ?To anyone thinking about it, buy a cheap hammock and take some extended naps at the house, if it seems nicer than being on the ground look into building a kit to go in whatever weather you'll be in.

  • Reply

@jscott8y And you could remedy all of that with a better sleeping pad.

  • Reply

@egeorge8z No, you cannot ?remedy all that with a better sleeping pad? unless you?re literally ditching the sleeping bag, cheap pad, and shelter,... and I highly doubt that you?re sleeping with only a pad and nothing else.?

  • Reply

it's obviously not for everyone but at least recognize that there are a bunch of people that love it and would never "go to ground" again!

  • Reply

@njohnson91 ?a tent setup only alleviates the need for two of the items you say a sleeping pad could replace

  • Reply

@sgray92 Hammock and straps are considered shelter, just as a tent would be. You?d be trading one for the other, not eliminating the need for one because of the other
